Doctoral program

In 2016, a doctoral school was established at the Department of Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching in the professional field 1.3. Pedagogy of Teaching in..., doctoral program "Methodology of Teaching a Foreign Language" (full-time, part-time and self-study). The doctoral program was successfully accredited and consolidated the leading position of the Department of Methodology nationally. Among the enrolled doctoral students are the names of various established researchers and teachers from the country and abroad: Anatoly Vassilev Deshev, Valentina Yordan Ilieva, Vesna Kirilova Prodanovska, Gloria Kostadinova Bakardzhieva, Dimitrios Angelos Galanos, Zarina Yuleva Markova, Ivan Stoyanov Merdzhanov, Ivanka Natova Natova, Ioannis Sotiriadis Sotirios, Maya Georgieva Boneva-Nikolova, Mirela (Dubali) Alhasani, Nikolina Marinova Iskarova, Nikos Andreou Filipou, Petar Dimitrov Todorov, Raya Petrova Zhivkova-Krupeva, Rebeya Begum, Reneta Viktorova Valkova, Slimane Belhaddad, Yana Dyankova Shishkova-Dimitrova, etc. The training is carried out at the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology of Sofia University, applying the procedures for the development, approval, monitoring and updating of the educational documentation (qualification characteristics, curricula and programs, etc.), laid down in the institutional documents, created on the basis of the current laws and regulations, and seeking the active cooperation of representatives of the partner employer organizations, students and other interested parties. They include well-structured opportunities for practical training and are periodically updated on the basis of market research, student opinion and the comparison of curricula and programs with those operating in other higher education institutions in the country and abroad. Doctoral students who have chosen this professional field are recognized for courses that form academic knowledge and competencies, specific research knowledge and competencies, as well as courses in the scientific field and thematic focus of the doctoral studies and organized by: other doctoral schools at Sofia University; other universities with which Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has cooperation agreements (including doctoral mobility). All mandatory disciplines are attended during the first and second year of doctoral studies. Doctoral students have the right to choose no less than two doctoral courses from the mandatory elective courses and no less than two doctoral courses from the elective courses throughout the entire period of study. The doctoral student, together with his/her scientific supervisor, determines and includes in the individual plan two elective courses with a teaching load of 30 lecture hours and five credits for each course. The attendance and grades of the mandatory and elective doctoral courses are certified by a protocol issued by the doctoral student inspector at the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology or by the relevant unit where the training is carried out, and the protocol is submitted in a timely manner to the inspector responsible for the doctoral students. The module, forming the mandatory general academic knowledge and competencies, includes the disciplines: academic writing for pedagogical sciences, led by Prof. Dr. Dimitar Veselinov, methodology of pedagogical research and information technologies in pedagogical research, led by Prof. Dr. Todor Shopov, as well as methodology of foreign language teaching, led by Prof. Dr. Todor Shopov. The module, which forms specific research knowledge and competencies, is elective and contains the following disciplines: philological knowledge today, led by Prof. Dr. Dimitar Veselinov (the course is also read in the professional direction 2.1. Philology); history of foreign language teaching, led by Prof. Dr. Dimitar Veselinov. The Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology publishes the journal "Philology", in which doctoral students from the Department in the Linguistics section publish. PhD students who have defended their thesis have the right to publish in the Yearbook of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology, whose editor-in-chief is Prof. D. Veselinov. The publication has an electronic version. It is located on the website of the University Library.
