Methodology of French language teaching

The beginning of this course at Sofia University was laid by Slavcho Dimitrov, who taught it in Bulgarian from 1949 to 1955. In 1956, together with Pavel Patev, he published a textbook on this discipline. In 1956, the course was taken over by the first professor of French language methodology at the university - Pavel Patev, who led it without interruption for almost 35 years until 1991. He marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of the theoretical training of student novelists from the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. Prof. Patev published a new textbook on French language methodology, which underwent 4 (revised and expanded) editions. Under his leadership, the spirit of the specialty was formed, in which foreign language teaching was viewed as an integrative process, in which the various discussion problems were presented critically and impartially and reflected the theoretical achievements of the individual schools and movements. In contrast to the narrowly specialized view of methodology, Pavel Patev emphasizes the need to combine methodological research with specific developments of problems in private linguistics: for him, seriously prepared foreign language teachers and lecturers in methodology are specialists with complex linguistic and methodological qualifications. In this sense, Pavel Patev considers the lecture course on methodology of foreign language teaching as a synthesis of the “necessary and sufficient” theoretical and practical information for the preparation of future foreign language teachers. Its goal is to combine and mutually complement scientifically based theory and creative practice, directing students to appropriate, diverse and effective ways and forms of work, to a constant striving for self-improvement. The tradition was continued by Maria Petrova, who habilitated in 1986, who lectured to first-year students of the novelist program for five years - from 1991 to 1996. From 1996 to 1998, the course was taught by two lecturers - Dimitar Veselinov (history of methodology and theory of teaching phonetics, vocabulary and grammar) and Radost Tsaneva (theory of teaching speech activities and problems of assessment). In 1998, the course was taken over by Dimitar Veselinov, who began to teach it in French. With the introduction of a second major and part-time education, a course on methodology of the French language began to be taught for these streams of students. The first lecturer to teach such a course at Sofia University was Maria Petrova (1974-1992). The course was then continued by Dimitar Veselinov (1992-1998) and Radost Tsaneva (1998-2001). Since 2003, Dimitar Veselinov has been the head of the course on French language teaching methodology, and he has been promoted to associate professor (2004) and professor (2008).
