Methodology of English language teaching

The course on English language methodology has been taught at Sofia University since 1949. The first appointed lecturer was Nadezhda Radulova, who taught the course from 1949 to 1957. In 1958, Anna Dzhumadanova was hired as a lecturer on methodology, who taught the lecture course until 1975. For the following academic year, Lili Genkova was appointed as a part-time lecturer (1975-1976). Vera Despotova continued the theoretical course from 1976. She was the first lecturer to receive a habilitation in English language methodology (1988) at Sofia University ("Linguistic foundations of foreign language teaching"). She also taught special courses on the history of foreign language teaching and the peculiarities of foreign language acquisition with a break of several years. During this period, she was replaced by Lili Savova (1982-1985). Todor Shopov is the second associate professor in English language methodology to be habilitated (1997) and the first professor in this discipline in Bulgaria (2013). At the beginning, he taught the theoretical course in methodology for second-degree students (1983-1998) and for part-time students (1983-1993). Since 1997, he has been the titular lecturer of the English language methodology course. He also teaches a special course on problems of the application of tests in foreign language teaching. Yordanka Simeonova teaches the theoretical course for part-time students and teaches it from 1993 to 1998, when the last class of part-time students graduated. Since 1998, she has been teaching the lecture course for the second-degree English Philology. He habilitated in 2002 in English language teaching methodology with his work "The Foreign Language Teacher: with a Communicative Orientation and Communicativeness in Teaching". In 2004, Raya Zhivkova-Krupeva was recruited as an assistant professor of English language methodology, who took over the exercises and student practices. With the introduction of binary majors, it was necessary to complete the teaching staff with Asst. Prof. Dr. Tsvetanka Dilkova, who from 2019 began leading the methodological disciplines in the binary majors in the Faculty of Biology, the Faculty of Geology and Geography and the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Her doctoral thesis, defended in 2017, was on the topic "Learning Strategies in Translation in English Language Teaching for Chemical Technology Majors - Methodological Projections".
